According to the Health Insurance Law in Dubai, misuse of health insurance cards call for a fine. A fine of Dh5,000 will be levied if health insurance card holders allow someone else to use their card.
The Health Insurance Law follows the decision of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, pursuant to provisions of law No. 11 of 2013 on health insurance, aimed to end negative practices by hospitals and insurance companies and individuals.
Health insurance is mandatory for residents in Dubai.
The Health Insurance Law stipulates fines of between Dh500 and Dh350,000 under 56 categories. Some of these fines are:
- Employers or sponsors who fail to include workers under their sponsorship in health insurance, or include them at a value less than the basic coverage as stipulated by the government, will face Dh500 fine per month of delay.
- A fine of Dh1,000 will be levied in the event employers or sponsors refuse to pay the cost of health services or medical intervention in an emergency to those under their sponsorship.
- Insurancee companies that do not allow beneficiaries to avail their specific rights under the health insurance policy will face a fine of Dh50,000.
- A fine of Dh5,000 will be levied if health insurance card holders allow someone else to use their card
