Du internet service in UAE has partially restored as one of the two cable cuts has been restored while the second one might take weeks.
A cut in SMW3 cable has been restored while repairs for the other cable, i2i, may take take one or two weeks. The cause behind the cuts was not shared by the cable operators.
Du earlier informed its customers on the possible disruptions in internet services due to cable cuts.

The Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA), jointly with Etisalat, recently launched the campaign to raise awareness and discourage the use of mobile phones that use a fake (or cloned) International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. An (IMEI) number is a unique 15-digit code on every mobile phone.
As Emirates 24X7 reports, Etisalat will begin stopping functionality of fake illegal handsets from January 1, 2012.
Etisalat has notified customers via SMS message alerting them about their use of fake mobile devices with a fake IMEI number. In order to avoid disconnection of service from January 1, onward, affected customers can replace their fake mobile devices with approved, high quality ones available from Etisalat.

Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) has announced that Dubai will link residence visas to Emirates Identity Cards from April 1, 2012.
ID card link to visas in Dubai will be compulsory from from April next year, said Eida, adding that the procedure will be co-ordination with the General Department of Residency and Naturalisation.
Eida stressed that ID card registration is mandatory for issuing and renewing residence visas in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah.

With recession in Europe and US getting worse from bad, companies in the UAE plan to rightsize to cut costs and stay in business. This will bring a new wave of unemployment to the shores of Dubai as well.
Jobs in Abu Dhabi’s construction industry are likely to be the most affected as state-backed firms reassess their budgets.
The UAE was dealt a blow by the global economic crisis in 2008, which saw property prices decline by around 60 percent as banks curtailed their lending and speculators left the market.

It seems that the real life usage of Emirates ID Card is just around the corner now, almost.
As stated by Saqr Gobash, the Minister of Labour, expatriates will no longer need to have a Labour Card by late 2012 when a decision to replace it with the national identity card is enforced.
“The Ministry of Labour will scrap all Labour Cards once it receives a request from Eida….there will be no need for all expatriates to carry too many cards after the ID registration is completed in the second half of 2012.”

Saqr Gobash, the Minister of Labour, has recently stated that the number of foreign workers in the UAE stood at 3.8 million in 2010. Out of the total only 266,000 had University education while 2 million have no qualifications whatsoever.
The expat-dominated UAE population was estimated to have grown to around 8.2 million by the end of 2010, with UAE nationals making only 11.47 per cent.
According to Saqr Ghobash, UAE is aiming to reduce the number of unskilled foreign workers.

Go4it, a co-branded credit card jointly launched by RTA, Emirates NBD, and Visa International, combines features of a Visa Credit card and RTA Nol card, which is used for public transport travel in Dubai.
The new ‘Go4it’ credit card comes with Nol transit application, used for making payments on the RTA transit network and at parking meters. The credit card is linked to Nol and Salik accounts and can be configured to automatically top up these accounts when the funds fall below certain levels.
