No Residence Visa in Dubai without ID Card from April

Hope this is not an April Fool prank.
Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) has announced that Dubai will link residence visas to Emirates Identity Cards from April 1, 2012.
ID card link to visas in Dubai will be compulsory from from April next year, said Eida, adding that the procedure will be co-ordination with the General Department of Residency and Naturalisation.
Eida stressed that ID card registration is mandatory for issuing and renewing residence visas in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah.

All about Emirates ID Card
In April 2006, the UAE Government introduced a single identity card. This card, commonly known as Emirates ID Card, is compulsory for everyone living legally in the UAE, including nationals, expatriates and GCC citizens.
Emirates Identity Authority:
Emirates ID Card is produced and updated by Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA). EIDA is an independent federal authority established by virtue of the federal decree, having ultimate powers required for the execution of the Population Register and the ID card program. EIDA functions include:
1. The registration of personal data for the whole population in the country and saving the same at the electronic data bases in coordination with the competent authorities.
